Give priority to using remdesivir to treat F0 over 65 years old and obese

The Ministry of Health allows the use of antiviral drug remdesivir for F0 inpatient treatment, with priority given to high-risk groups including people over 65 years old, with underlying medical conditions, and obese (BMI >25).

Medical facilities are only allowed to use the drug after obtaining the consent of the patient or family member, according to Guidelines for the implementation of remdesivir in the treatment of Covid-19 Ministry of Health issued on 12/8.

Remdesivir has not been licensed by the Ministry of Health to treat Covid-19. The temporary guidance on using remdesivir 100 mg (5 mg/ml) of the Ministry of Health is based on the guidance of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Medicines Agency.

According to the guidelines of the Ministry of Health, remdesivir is point with people with Covid-19 hospitalized in hospital with respiratory failure, oxygen, high-flow oxygen (HFNC) or non-invasive mechanical ventilation. The time to take the drug is within the first 10 days from the onset of the disease.

The Ministry of Health noted not to start using the drug for Covid-19 patients requiring invasive ventilation, ECMO. In case of being treated with remdesivir before invasive mechanical ventilation or ECMO, continue taking for the full course.

People with impaired kidney function taking this drug currently have no data to evaluate… In particular, do not infuse remdesivir with other drugs.

Undesirable effects of the drug include: hypersensitivity reactions such as hypotension, nausea, vomiting, sweating, shivering. Therefore, medical staff should choose slow infusion over 120 minutes to limit unwanted effects for patients.

Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Truong Son repeatedly emphasized that “remdesivir is used to treat Covid-19 patients in accordance with the recommendations of the Ministry of Health, appointed by doctors at medical facilities, people absolutely do not arbitrarily use”.

The Ministry of Health recommends that treatment facilities monitor and evaluate the treatment effectiveness and safety of drugs, report on the 30th of every month to summarize and propose additional guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of Covid-19.

Remdesivir is an antiviral drug, which was urgently approved by the FDA in October 2020 for the treatment of Covid-19 patients. Remdesivir has been shown to shorten recovery time and reduce mortality in critically ill patients. The drug has been included in the treatment regimen by 50 countries such as the US, EU, Australia, Japan, Singapore, and India since May 2020. .

10,000 vials of remdesivir distributed to Ho Chi Minh City were among 50,000 vials returning to Vietnam on the night of August 5. It is expected that in August there will be a total of 500,000 jars. This is the number of drugs donated by Vingroup to the Ministry of Health for emergency treatment of Covid-19.
