HanoiHuu Nghi Hospital provides free early diagnosis and counseling of prostate cancer for men over 50 years old.
The free examination program takes place on January 9 and January 16, from 7:30 a.m. to 12 a.m. In particular, people are examined through the rectum, tested for screening and early detection of cancer, prostate ultrasound and counseling when the examination results are available. If cancer is suspected, the doctor will order more biopsies and other specialized tests.
Doctor Le Thi Khanh Tam, Head of Radiotherapy Oncology Department, Friendship Hospital, said prostate cancer tends to increase in Vietnam. According to the latest Globocan estimate for 2018, prostate cancer ranks 6th in terms of incidence among cancers, five places higher than the statistic in 2012. Based on this estimate, there are approximate 40 men are infected in 100,000 people, the death rate is up to 45% compared with the number.
Prostate cancer can be controlled, prolong the life of the patient, improve the quality of life more than many other cancers when detected early and treated promptly and methodically. However, there is currently no program of screening and early diagnosis for this disease in the community. Besides, some doctors have not been fully understood about the treatment method or think that the disease only needs to cut the testicles, there is no additional treatment.
“So the free examination program is very important, helping medical staff, patients and surrounding people understand more about the disease and the role of early detection and screening for prostate cancer” Dr. Tam said.
