Footballer Benjamin Mendy charged with seventh rape

The loads are increasing. The footballer Benjamin Mendy, French international of Manchester City, is now accused of a seventh rape by the British justice. The Crown Court of Chester (north-west of England) announced this Wednesday, December 22, the day of the appearance of the 27-year-old. A new complainant reported facts that allegedly took place in July of this year.

The French international is therefore now targeted by seven counts of rape on four women and one count of sexual assault on a fifth, for facts which allegedly took place between October 2020 and August 2021.

In pre-trial detention since the end of August, the footballer appeared for 40 minutes on Wednesday. He only spoke to confirm his name. At the same hearing, another man, Louis Saha Matturie, 40, whose ties to Benjamin Mendy are not clearly established, also appeared. He is charged with six rapes and one sexual assault between March and August 2021.

Both men were remanded in custody pending trial, which was postponed until the summer (June 27 or 1er August) after being originally scheduled for January 24. A preliminary hearing is however maintained on this date, and another has been scheduled for January 7.

Several years behind bars

The case started at the end of August when the Manchester City club announced the player’s suspension without further explanation. English justice then quickly announced that the player had been remanded in custody after being accused of four rapes – including one committed a few days earlier, while on parole – and sexual assault, by three women including a minor. These first events are said to have taken place at his home in Prestbury, Cheshire.

The British justice did not give more details on the new facts which are reproached to him.

The player is expected to announce shortly whether or not he pleaded guilty to the new rape charges. The maximum penalty he incurs, if he pleads not guilty, is life imprisonment. And even if he avoids such a sentence, a conviction could earn him several years behind bars and an immediate end of his career.
