Florian Zeller’s The Father thrills the French box office

The double Oscar-winning film (best adaptation), with a masterful Anthony Hopkins (best actor), took the top spot in theatrical attendance from its first week of operation.

For once, criticism and the vox populi are reconciled. Upon its release in French theaters, The Father, the recently Oscar-winning double film by Florian Zeller (best adaptation for the director and best performance for Anthony Hopkins) rose to the top of the French box office, attracting just over 27,000 spectators in its first week of operation.

This success, which could appeal to many others in the weeks to come, will certainly give some balm to the heart to Anthony Hopkins who in a recent interview with the Figaro said with undisguised pride, “The Father is one of my best movies.”

The Bouchetrous dream of the first place

Just behind the touching film adaptation of Florian Zeller’s play, the American-Chinese animated film by David Silverman and Raymond Persi, The Bouchetrous, continues to dream of the gold of the prize list with a little more than 24,000 spectators. It will be interesting to see which of these two very different feature films wins the attendance race in the weeks to come.

A good distance from the top two on the list, Meander, the science fiction film by Mathieu Turi, and the sociological thriller Promising Young Woman Emerald Fennel took 3rd and 4th places with some 7,000 spectators respectively.

After a fanfare start during the first week of theaters reopening, marking the start of deconfinement, attendance at French theaters will therefore have slowed down a little at the end of May. The operators are not however worried. Last year, we had to wait until June 22 for everything to return to normal …
