“Fanfan la Tulipe” as on the first day

Christian-Jaque’s cabriolant masterpiece with Gérard Philipe is restored in 4K. The actor’s daughter hails the “modernity” of this classic.

It took place under the light and smiling French sky, in the midst of the “lace war” under Louis XV in 1756. Having told a little peasant girl in the shade of a cozy haystack, a mischievous young man named Fanfan (Gérard Philipe) enlists in the French army to escape a marriage which he does not care about. He does so with all the more conviction that on the way to church, a pretty gypsy (Gina Lollobrigida) predicted a brilliant career for him and even his future marriage to the king’s daughter …

Everyone remembers the first scenes of the legendary swashbuckling film by Christian Jaque. On a prancing screenplay by Henri Jeanson, Gérard Philipe embodies a solar, poetic, carefree hero who breathes freshness, life and naivety. While we now know that he was going to leave us suddenly at the age of 36, barely seven years later.

“The restoration was not easy. We started with nitrate image and sound negatives. It’s a great chance to still have the originals for a 1952 film ”
