Emergency imposed in Ukraine, Security Council approved amid growing threat of Russian aggression

Russia Ukraine conflict: Ukraine’s Security Council has approved a plan to declare a state of national emergency in response to the growing threat of Russian aggression. Earlier Ukraine’s top security official had said Ukraine would impose a state of emergency in all Ukrainian regions except the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Ukraine’s top security official says the state of emergency will last for 30 days and could be extended for another 30 days.

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized two Russian-backed separatist regions in eastern Ukraine – Donetsk and the Luhansk People’s Republic – as an “independent” country. Putin addressed the nation on television on Monday night. Putin said Russian forces would enter Eastern Europe and work to establish peace in separatist regions. According to the mandate of the President, Russian forces will work to maintain peace in Luhansk and Donetsk. After this decision of Putin, Russia-Ukraine tension has reached its peak.

Many countries imposed sanctions against Russia
After this decision of Russia, many countries have announced economic sanctions on Russia. US President Joe Biden has imposed sanctions against two financial institutions, the VEB and the Russian Military Bank. Biden also said that some parts of the Russian economy were being removed from the international financial system. Along with this, sanctions can also be imposed on the upper class of Russia and their families.

Germany has started the process of stopping the certification process of ‘Nord Stream 2’ gas pipeline from Russia. It was a lucrative deal for Moscow and the US criticized Europe’s growing dependence on Russian energy supplies.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday announced sanctions on five Russian banks and three ‘high net worth individuals’. He told that the three billionaires of Russia who have been banned, their wealth in Britain is being frozen and they will be stopped from coming to Britain.
