Distorted mouth after night bath

Quang NinhThe 66-year-old woman woke up with a distorted mouth, unable to close her eyes. Her family took her to the Vietnam Sweden Uong Bi Hospital for emergency treatment.

The patient said that the day before he went to the rain, took a bath at night, the next day he woke up with a distorted mouth, difficult speech, spilled food and drink, and could not close his right eye. Doctors diagnosed her with right peripheral VII nerve palsy.

Doctor Dang Thi Thu Vy, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, Neurology, Musculoskeletal, said on August 4, peripheral nerve palsy is a disease caused by damage to the central nervous system, infection, and trauma, but often The most common is cold.

Common manifestations of the disease are imbalance on both sides of the face, half of the face is immobile, loss of forehead wrinkles, eyes are not closed, eyebrows are lowered, nasal grooves – cheeks are blurred, and mouth is distorted.

Facial paralysis, mouth distortion can occur at any age, is not life-threatening, usually resolves after two to three weeks of treatment. However, if you go to the hospital late, the recovery time will be longer or not, leaving the sequelae of facial distortion, dryness, scratching and ulceration of the cornea due to the eyes being closed, prone to dust and wind clinging to rubbing. After recovering from the disease, there may still be facial twitching because of incomplete nerve recovery, or hemifacial spasticity when the nerve degenerates.

Doctors recommend that, when detecting the above symptoms, family members need to take the patient to the hospital as soon as possible. “Long-term paralysis of nerves can be difficult to recover, leaving patients with permanent sequelae,” emphasized the doctor.

To prevent disease, doctors recommend people not to take a bath late; especially those who are weak, do little exercise, often use alcohol, go early to late at night or have a history of high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, stay up late, potentially at risk of disease.

When infected, absolutely do not arbitrarily treat with unscientific methods such as applying eel tails and leaves to make the condition worse. People should also not be too worried about the Covid-19 epidemic but hesitate to be hospitalized, leading to skipping the golden period of treatment.
