DISAPPEARANCE – The French comedian died on January 17 at the age of 86 following a road accident. After having worked in his youth for the new wave and the master of suspense, he will be at the end of his career a figure in the films of Claire Denis.

The director Claire Denis, who used her talents four times at the end of her career, painted a portrait as laudatory as it was original of the one who will have been one of her favorite actors: “Michel Subor showed a massive block, impermeable and at the same time, he escaped us, he dreamed. Michel Subor, born Michel Subotzky, was born in Paris on February 2, 1935. The short history of cinema will remember that he started alongside Louis de Funès in 1959 in My friend the gypsy. Two years later, Roger Vadim entrusts him with a role in The strap on the neck where he meets Brigitte Bardot and Mireille Darc.

But it was obviously his work with the heralds of the new wave that soon caught the attention of moviegoers. In 1962, he is the narrator of Jules and Jim by François Truffaut, and especially in 1963, he played Bruno Forestier, a deserter from the Algerian War, who was to fall into the movement of the OAS, under the direction of Jean-Luc Godard in The Little Soldier. Michel Subor now has a recognized name. He played abroad in 1965 the cult What’s up Pussycat by Clive Donner and above all The Vise by the undisputed master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock.
