Tokyo: The Dalai Lama, a spiritual leader in exile in Tibet, has said that Chinese leaders do not understand the diversity of different cultures and that the ruling Communist Party’s inclination towards tighter social controls could be harmful.
The Dalai Lama also said on Wednesday that he wants to stay in India, where he has lived since 1959, rather than engage in complicated politics between an officially atheist Communist Party-ruled China and ardently Buddhist Taiwan.
No plans yet to meet Chinese President: Dalai Lama
At an online news conference hosted by the Tokyo Foreign Correspondents Club, Dalai, 86, said he had no specific plans to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping. He also declined to comment on Xi’s plan to run for a third term in office.
The Tibetan spiritual leader said, “Chinese communist leaders do not understand the diversity of cultures. In fact, excessive control will harm people.” It is noteworthy that China maintains tight control of all religions and in recent years it has launched a cultural inclusion campaign targeting Tibetans, Muslim Uygurs and other minority groups.
The Dalai Lama said this…
The Dalai Lama said he did not want to get into “local and political entanglements” but was dedicated to contributing to the cause of brothers and sisters in Taiwan and mainland China. “Sometimes I really feel that this ordinary Buddhist monk doesn’t want to get involved in complicated politics.”
The Dalai Lama retired from politics in 2011 but remains a strong advocate of preserving the Tibetan tradition. China accuses him of being a supporter of Tibet’s independence. At the same time, the Dalai Lama says that he is merely a custodian of Tibet’s autonomy and local Buddhist culture.
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said the doors to talks with the Dalai Lama were open but Beijing would not discuss Tibet’s status. “The Dalai Lama side should abandon its stand on disbanding China, stop its separatist activities and do concrete work to win the trust of the central government and the Chinese people,” Wang said in a regular press briefing on Wednesday. .”
