For more than a year, producing and eating has become the daily challenge of a confused world. This is the title of the 2021 edition of Demeter, published by the think tank Iris and which examines each year the state of agriculture in the world. The global pandemic has profoundly transformed the modes of consumption, production and trade in the agricultural world.

Strangely, prices fell initially, in the wake of the price of oil. But since last summer, the prices of agricultural commodities – soybeans, wheat, corn, sugar, rice – have rebounded to the point that food prices are at their highest since July 2014, according to the United Nations index. for agriculture and food (FAO).

The FAO, which is worried about the consequences of this price increase on world food security, while the covid 19 pandemic could plunge 130 million people to the brink of famine. The organization is also worried about the risks of food nationalism, which could push some governments to secure their supplies.
