Covid-19 cools down

The number of infections, severe cases and deaths in provinces and cities tends to decrease day by day, Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Truong Son said that “the epidemic is under control”.

The Emergency Department, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, these two days are less rushed than during the most stressful time in January. The department once expanded to two more units on the 3rd and 4th floors of the hospital to treat about 90 F0 severe, receiving more than 10 F0 every day. Currently, the department only receives about 4 F0 a day, and also treats 13 mechanical ventilation cases, 16 oxygen breathing cases, the number of plasma filtration, dialysis, and HFNC breathing, one for each as of April 6.

Doctor Tran Van Bac, Deputy Head of the Emergency Department, said that the department still maintains a unit on the 3rd floor of the hospital to treat Covid-19, the 4th floor unit has stopped working, the main unit is on the 1st floor of the hospital. Hospitals are disinfected to treat other common patients.

The whole hospital currently has about 150 Covid-19 patients, of which 2 ECMO cases are treated in the ICU. The hospital is still accepting treatment for Covid-19, from April 4, it will start receiving treatment for other diseases.

Not only at the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, other Covid-19 treatment hospitals in Hanoi also recorded a decrease in the number of cases. As reported by the Hanoi Department of Health, as of April 5, the city has more than 174,300 F0 patients being treated and monitored, including 906 cases at the hospital, 6 cases at the collection facility. A week earlier, on March 28, the capital had 226,758 F0s being treated and monitored, of which 1,581 were at the hospital, 192 were at the collection facility. Thus, the number of F0 treated at the hospital decreased about 1.7 times in a week, the number of new infections decreased by 1.3 times. The total number of infections in Hanoi so far is more than 1.5 million, the highest in the country and three times higher than Ho Chi Minh City.

As of the afternoon of April 5, Hanoi had 111 cases of requiring oxygen, of which 13 were mechanically ventilated. The number of cases being treated in Hanoi decreased by 0.13% compared to the average of 7 days ago; the number of new cases decreased by 0.31% compared to the previous week. The number of deaths from Covid-19 during the day decreased sharply, from 13 cases on March 10 to one case on April 5, of which no deaths were recorded from March 29 to April 1.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the Covid-19 epidemic also decreased. According to the report of the Steering Committee for Disease Prevention and Control of Ho Chi Minh City as of April 3, the city recorded 597,402 cases of Covid-19. The number of new cases in the previous 5 days tended to decrease, from nearly 1,000 cases on March 30 to 347 cases on April 3. About 2,500 patients are being treated at medical facilities, the number of hospitalized patients per day is still lower than the number of discharges and tends to decrease. Over the past month, the number of deaths has been low, about 10 days now, only one death per day has been recorded, of which, on April 2, there was no patient death.

The number of infections nationwide also tended to decrease in the last week of March and early April. From more than 450,000 cases on March 12, the number of infections gradually decreased to more than 111,000 cases on March 29 and still more than 50,000 cases on April 5 (a decrease of about 9 times). The number of severe cases also halved after nearly a month, from more than 3,800 on March 9 to more than 2,400 on April 5.

Answer VnExpress April 6, Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Truong Son said that the decrease in the number of Covid-19 cases nationwide is “a very happy signal”.. Two big cities, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, have reopened many activities, including for elementary and preschool students to go back to school. This is proof that these two cities and many others are implementing safe and flexible adaptation of Covid-19.

“The epidemic is under control,” said Deputy Minister Son, saying that the cooling of Covid-19 also shows the community’s sense of responsibility in implementing the recommendations of the Ministry of Health. People have participated in the vaccination campaign and achieved very high results.

As of April 5, the country has injected more than 207 million doses of vaccine, of which 100% of people over 18 years old get the first dose, 99% get the second dose, and 50% get the third dose; 99% of 12-17 year olds get the first dose and 94% get the second dose. The vaccine coverage rate is high nationwide and the high-risk group is cared for, so the death rate / number of infections has decreased deeply, according to experts.

Vietnam is also self-sufficient in the source of antiretroviral drugs to treat Covid-19 with 3 companies participating in the production, able to supply about 160 million molnupiravir tablets a month. In which, Stellapharm Vietnam can reach a production capacity of up to 100 million tablets a month; Boston Vietnam Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company can produce 30-60 million tablets a month; The company Mekophar does not announce production. The company Stellapharm Vietnam has also been transferred technology to produce the drug containing the active ingredient nirmatrelvir of Pfizer, which is in trial production of initial batches.

Although Covid-19 tends to decrease, the health industry will continue to closely monitor the epidemic and make necessary recommendations, according to Deputy Minister Son. One of the upcoming tasks set by the Ministry of Health is to prevent new mutations. The plan to prevent mutations is set out by the Ministry of Health based on 3 scenarios of the World Health Organization (WHO).

In there, scenario one is a virus that can continue to evolve from Omicron, BA.1, BA.2, XE (which is a hybrid strain BA.1 and BA.2)… Since then, the Ministry of Health has been monitoring by epidemiological analysis. and in the laboratory for timely detection of mutants entering Vietnam. In this scenario, the high-risk group still needs to continue to be vaccinated to ensure herd immunity and improve individual immunity. Currently, Vietnam has not recorded the XE variant.

Second scenario As a result, a attenuated virus strain will appear, Covid-19 becomes a common disease, then the role of vaccines and vaccine research will be reduced. Third scenario The disease can get worse, new strains appear, reducing the protective effect of vaccines. For these two scenarios, the Ministry of Health will continue to monitor epidemiology, especially viral gene sequencing to find new strains and be ready to deal with them. In addition, continue to follow the spirit of Resolution 38 and the national epidemic prevention program in 2022.

Deputy Minister Son also advised the community not to be subjective when seeing that Covid-19 tends to cool down. People still need to observe not to gather in large numbers on holidays, anniversaries and next April 30. He asked people to support the vaccination program for children aged 5-11 in the upcoming vaccination campaign, so that this age group can be protected against the disease. The Ministry of Health will direct vaccination as soon as the vaccine source is available.
