Washington: China has begun construction of more than 100 new silos for intercontinental ballistic missiles in the desert area near the country’s northwestern city of Yumen, a leading US newspaper said based on satellite images. This move of China is being seen as a major expansion in its nuclear capability.
According to the news published in the ‘Washington Post’, the silo construction project could give China a place to hide its nuclear weapons. According to the report, 119 similar manufacturing sites are similar to the sites for the launch of China’s existing nuclear-armed ballistic missiles. The capability of these missiles is such that they can reach America upon launch.
Images obtained from commercial satellites through California’s James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies show the manufacturing site is spread over hundreds of square miles in Gansu province, about 2,100 kilometers from Beijing, the news said. According to the news, if the construction work of more than 100 missile silos is successful then it will be a historic moment for China.
Significantly, China already has the possibility of 250 to 350 nuclear weapons. The actual number of new missiles for these silos is not known. China has also deployed decoy silos in many places in the past.
