We had no news from Juliette Binoche. She was looking for work. Her husband dumped her. He was a mechanic. She arrives in Caen, where she doesn’t know anyone. As she does not know how to do anything, the local ANPE directs her to a job as a maintenance agent. She learns to write her CV, to invent qualities and even faults. The basics of the job: smile, say hello, goodbye, thank you. The life of a cleaning lady is more transparent than a window pane. Marianne scrubs the floors, cleans the toilets. She never goes fast enough. If she protests, she attracts replies from her employer: “Do not try to educate people who have more than you”. She takes notes. We guess she is not who she claims. In fact, it is a journalist – Florence Aubenas in real life – who chose to immerse herself in the daily life of precarious people to write a book to testify to the harshness of their lot.
