The Canadian Drug Administration approved the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine, on December 10. The people of this country could be vaccinated next week.
Health Canada said it has completed an independent review of full vaccine safety and efficacy data. Urgent approval decisions are largely based on documentation provided by Pfizer. The vaccine will only be given to people over 16 years of age.
Health Canada has determined that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine meets stringent safety, efficacy and quality requirements for use in Canada.
In its official statement, the ministry added: “Canadians can be confident that the review process is rigorous, we have a strict monitoring system”.
In an interview with local media, Dr. Jelena Vojicic, head of Pfizer’s vaccine medicine team in Canada, said he was “very pleased” with the country’s health authority’s decision.
“This is certainly a historic moment for science and Canadians. It was also the result of a tremendous effort, starting with the international scientific community, then the dedication of the staff. Pfizer and BioNTech, clinical trial sites and volunteers, “said Dr. Jelena Vojicic.
On December 7, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the first doses of the Pfizer vaccine will be delivered to 14 Canadian distribution centers next week. Immunization will start as soon as the product is approved under regulations, officials said.
The first batch of 249,000 injections were shipped to the country from factories in the US and Belgium. Canada has ordered 6 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine, enough for about 3 million people.
Canada is the third country in the world to approve the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Before that, British health officials approved the company’s injections, the immunization campaign just started on December 8 with the name V-day. After the UK, Bahrain also approved the Pfizer vaccine.
