Caesarean section to catch a baby and order ECMO to save a pregnant woman with Covid-19

Ho Chi Minh CityThe 31-year-old woman, 31 weeks pregnant, contracted Covid-19 and progressed very seriously, forcing the doctor to have an emergency caesarean section to save her baby and immediately intervene ECMO for the mother.

On the afternoon of July 28, Doctor Tran Thanh Linh, Deputy Director of the Emergency Resuscitation Department at Cho Ray Hospital and Deputy Director of the Covid-19 Resuscitation Hospital, received a phone call from a colleague at the City Children’s Hospital, asking for a consultation. ECMO intervention for a female Covid-19 patient.

This patient is also a doctor at City Children’s Hospital, 31 weeks pregnant, on a ventilator at Trung Vuong Hospital.

Cho Ray’s emergency resuscitation team (in charge of the Covid-19 Resuscitation Hospital) quickly arrived at Trung Vuong. They collaborated with colleagues from the Obstetrics Department of Trung Vuong Hospital, the Neonatal Resuscitation Department of City Children’s Hospital to operate on the baby and place the ECMO (extracorporeal circulatory system) right in the operating room for the mother.

After the operation, the 2 kg baby boy was taken to the City Children’s Hospital to continue monitoring his health. The mother was transferred to the 2A Intensive Care Unit of the Covid-19 Resuscitation Hospital.

On August 6, after more than a week of ECMO intervention, mechanical ventilation, and active dialysis, the mother was weaned from the ventilator, extubated, and weaned off ECMO successfully. You can make a video call to see your child being healthy, laughing in tears.

Feeling the joy of the patient’s colleague, Dr. Linh shared: “Looking at her smile and the baby’s peace has helped us relieve a lot of fatigue in the white nights fighting for each life. of critically ill patients”.
