Bone marrow transplant saves boys with neuroblastoma

HueA 2.5-year-old boy, in Dong Nai, with neuroblastoma, received a self-marrow transplant by a doctor from Hue Central Hospital.

On December 14, the baby was discharged from the hospital after nearly a month of monitoring marrow transplant at Hue Central Hospital.

One month ago, the baby was diagnosed with neuroblastoma by the Children’s Hospital 2 doctor, chemotherapy, surgery to remove the tumor. After that, the boy was transferred to Hue Central Hospital for further treatment.

To save the baby, the doctor consulted and decided to have self marrow transplant. The baby was harvested by the doctor and transplanted immediately afterwards. Dozens of nurses and doctors at Hue Central Hospital participated in the baby’s marrow transplant.

More than a month after the marrow transplant, the boy’s blood cell lines were restored. The baby continues to take the medicine, then goes to the Oncology Center for radiation therapy and retino-acid immunotherapy for 6 months.

Professor, Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep, Director of Hue Central Hospital, said that over a year of implementing child marrow transplant, the hospital has successfully performed 5 cases. This 2.5 year old boy is the youngest. In the near future, Hue Central Hospital will continue to perform many autologous marrow transplants for some other diseases such as retinoblastoma. The hospital also plans to carry out a copper marrow transplant.
