Giesecke + Devrient (G+D) wants to believe it: the banknote printing specialist has all the assets to respond to the revolution of digital central bank currencies (MNBC). “We have been working with central banks since our origins, explains to “Echos” Ralf Wintergerst, head of the German group since 2016. We have experience in electronic payments and we are specialists in the protection of digital infrastructure. »

For the Munich-based group, the stakes are high. On the one hand, most central banks have entered a phase of reflection, or even testing, around MNBC technology due to the rise of decentralized crypto-assets such as bitcoin. On the other hand, G+D’s original business, ticket printing, which still accounts for 50% of its business, is in steep decline due to the digitization of payments which is advancing at full speed.
