Baby boy with funnel chest malformation

Quang NinhSeeing a 12-year-old boy developing abnormally, the family took him to the doctor, discovered a chest concave deformity, and had to undergo breast augmentation surgery.

On August 4, Doctor Pham Viet Hung, Head of Surgery Department, Quang Ninh General Hospital, said that the baby had congenital chest concavity, indicated laparoscopic surgery to place metal rods to shape the sternum.

According to the doctor, this is a minimally invasive surgery with a small incision, less trauma and pain, and limited complications, but it is quite difficult due to the small age of the patient, the doctor has to thread the metal lifting bar safely. does not cause pneumothorax – overflow of blood into the pleural space.

The doctor made two small incisions with the size of 1.5-2 cm, positioned along the intercostal space on both sides, and placed the endoscopic lens into the left pleural space. The crew then placed the bent metal splint through the tunnel to inflate the concave chest area. The support bar is fixed with steel thread so that the brace adheres to the frame.

After 30 minutes of surgery, the patient was awake, breathing well, only mild pain in the surgical area.

Chest cavity, also known as funnel chest, is a birth defect caused by the abnormal development of certain rib cartilage that causes the rib cage to deform. Depending on the degree of concave from mild to severe, the disease can cause shortness of breath, progressive chest pain due to compression of the heart and lungs. In severe cases, the chest concave affects the appearance, the larger it is, the deeper the concavity, pulling and hunching the body, making the patient self-deprecating.

Previously, the doctor had to make a large incision in the mid-chest area to remove the overgrown rib cartilage and fix the sternum, causing pain and many complications. Currently, the endoscopic method of placing metal rods for congenital chest concave treatment is an advanced technique deployed in many hospitals, without causing damage to the sternum, quick recovery time, and high aesthetics.

With this method, patients can be discharged after 4-5 days, the complication rate is low, health and fitness are improved. Typically, patients will have their breast lift removed after two to three years (depending on age).

Doctors recommend that patients should be examined and treated early in the period of 5-18 years old. At this time, the thoracic bone is still soft, the shaping of the sternum will be easy, the ability to recover to its original form is high, and there is less pain compared to old age.
