According to analyst Ming Chi Kuo of research firm TFI Asset Management, 2022 will be an important year for Apple’s wearables business. Along with the release of the new AirPods Pro headset in the fall, Apple is expected to announce the long-rumored AR headset product.

According to Mr. Kuo’s report, in the last quarter of 2021, Apple sold a total of 90 million pairs of AirPods, including 27 million pairs of the latest generation. This sales contributed to 20% growth of the wearables business compared to 2020.

While the iPhone remains the company’s most important and most profitable product, Apple has focused on building its accessory ecosystem around its phone.

Wearable products did not break out in sales, but did make up a significant portion of the “Other Products” line, which includes other accessories like iPhone cases and charging cords. In the fourth quarter of 2020, the “Other products” segment achieved nearly 13 billion USD in revenue.

Apple launched a new version of AirPods late last year, which has many of the same features on the Pro, except for the noise cancellation feature. Currently, buyers can choose from 4 different AirPods models, priced from $ 129 to $ 549.

Expert Kuo also said that the next-generation AirPods will bring a new design and can emit a “beep” signal when the user drops the headset, along with better audio hardware for music playback. Mr. Kuo forecast that sales of the new AirPods Pro could reach 20 million units this year.

According to Bloomberg, Apple’s AR headset could be introduced as early as spring 2021 and officially hit shelves by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has planned to release a higher-end virtual reality headset this year. In addition, Bloomberg also reported that Apple will launch a new version of the Apple Watch in 2022, including a “stone pot” version.
