Acting President told the speaker – nominate a PM who is acceptable to both the government and the opposition

Sri Lanka Economic Crisis: Confusion over the formation of a new government continues amid heavy demonstrations in Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Acting President and Prime Minister Ranil Wickreme Singhe asked Parliament Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abhaywardene to nominate a Prime Minister who is acceptable to both the government and the opposition.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Wickremesinghe held a meeting with cabinet members in his office. It said that all the ministers involved in the meeting were of the opinion that as soon as there is an agreement to form an all-party government, they will hand over the responsibility to the new government.

Police said the security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters near the official residence of the Speaker of Parliament.

A young man died during the demonstration
A young man had died due to difficulty in breathing. He was among the group that stormed the Prime Minister’s Office in the morning. 35 others were injured in this incident. The media department of the Prime Minister said that the ruling party and the opposition together should form an all-party government.

The country’s President Rajapaksa had promised to resign on Wednesday. According to the news of News First channel, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP M.A. Sumanthiran said that the decision in this regard was taken in an all-party meeting in which all other leaders, except the leaders of the parties involved in the government, attended.

Will the Prime Minister be sacked?
Rajapaksa said that the decision was taken by consensus in the meeting. One decision deals with the demand for Wickremesinghe’s early resignation, while other decisions urge the Speaker to sack the prime minister before the President’s resignation takes effect.

The three commanders informed that the protesters were near the Parliament gate and wanted permission to remove the President and the Prime Minister by force. He said that we cannot agree to such a request.

What is the demand of opposition leaders?
The leaders demanded the speaker to sack Wickremesinghe for taking over as the caretaker president. It is noteworthy that President Rajapaksa fled the country on Wednesday and fled to Maldives from where he appointed Prime Minister Wickremesinghe as the acting President. Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abhaywardene says President Rajapaksa informed him over the telephone that he would resign today as promised. Voting for the new president will be held on July 20, he said.
