A good year. For the wealthiest, the results for the year are largely positive, supported by the euphoria of the financial markets. The wealth of billionaires is up 14% on average in Europe, 25% in North America and nearly 50% in Asia, according to data compiled by the Bloomberg agency. French billionaires have nothing to complain about, with an average increase of nearly 20% of their wealth in 2020.
An aberration ? As entire swathes of the global economy are threatened by business restrictions to fight the pandemic, billionaires continue to outnumber, and the amounts so high that they are becoming difficult to capture. The palm goes to Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla: his fortune has jumped 130 billion dollars in 2020, propelling him to second place in the world. The South African-born entrepreneur has benefited fully from Tesla’s surge of more than 700% this year, thanks to his approximately 20% stake in the manufacturer and compensation paid in shares.
