6 things to do to improve liver function

Alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) can occur with several conditions such as fatty liver, acute hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Drinking alcohol along with medications puts an undue burden on the liver. Alcohol makes liver damage worse in people with chronic hepatitis B and C viruses.

Use medicine properly

Dr. Khanh added that all drugs, when taken orally, pass through the liver and are broken down. Most medications are safe for the liver when taken as directed by your doctor. However, taking too many medications and often or taking more than one medicine at the same time can be harmful. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is an example of a common over-the-counter drug that can have serious liver effects if taken incorrectly. People should not arbitrarily use drugs and do not take supplements when not necessary.

Adopt a liver-friendly diet

For healthy liver function, it is important to ensure that a diet is beneficial for this organ in the long run. You should prioritize choosing whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean protein, dairy, and healthy fats. Foods that are good for the liver are also recommended such as grapefruit, blueberries, fish… The body also needs to get enough fiber to help the liver work smoothly. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are good sources of fiber.

Everyone needs to make sure to drink enough water – essential for the liver to function properly. Foods high in fat, sugar, and salt can affect liver function over time. Fried foods and fast foods can also affect health.

Weight loss

According to the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease (AASLD) Guidelines, losing weight is an important part of improving liver function. People who are obese and have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) who lose 3 to 5 percent of their body weight may experience a reduction in the accumulation of fat in the liver. If you lose 7-10% of your body weight, you can improve other symptoms of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease such as inflammation, fibrosis, etc.

The liver not only processes chemicals that enter the body through the mouth, but also chemicals that enter through the nose and skin. Some household products contain toxins that can damage the liver if exposed regularly.

To prevent long-term damage, you can choose organic produce to clean your home, avoid chemical pesticides during gardening, and take precautions to avoid breathing in chemical fumes. If you use chemicals or aerosols indoors, such as paint, make sure the space is well ventilated and wear a mask.
