Ho Chi Minh CityA 44-year-old man was stabbed in his eye by a 5-cm nail while working and had to have his right eye surgically removed.
The male patient, who lives in Vinh Long, worked as a plumber, had an accident while stretching a rope to close the concrete pouring phase.
After providing first aid at the commune health station, he was transferred to a local hospital. Here, the emergency team sucked pus and injected antibiotics, but the condition did not improve, so the right eye had to be surgically removed. Determining that this was a rare case with a complicated foreign body, the doctor transferred the patient to 115 People’s Hospital.
On June 24, Dr. Bui Trung Dung, Department of Odonto-Stomatology – Eye, 115 People’s Hospital, said that the patient was admitted with a foreign body through the right orbit through the ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. The sharp tip of the nail pierced the edge of the optic nerve cleft and was located near the left wall of the right sphenoid sinus, a dangerous position.
Doctors consulted many specialties, decided to operate, successfully removed the 5 cm long metal nail. Patients must take antibiotics, relieve pain, and clean their eyes every day. After three days of surgery, the eye area relieves pain, reduces discharge.
According to Dr. Dung, the foreign body in the eye socket, if not treated in time, can cause permanent disability, blindness, nerve damage. The case of a deep and complicated foreign body can cause serious complications leading to death.
The doctor recommends that workers involved in sharp objects should wear safety glasses and protective helmets with shields. Careful attention should be paid to complying with recommendations on occupational safety to avoid unfortunate incidents.
