5 mistakes when F0 self-treat at home

Steam, blow the wind many times; abuse of anti-inflammatory corticosteroids; Using too many tonics or using two antibiotics… are mistakes in the treatment of F0 that should be noted.

Doctor Nguyen Huy Hoang (Vietnam – Russia Hyperbaric Oxygen Center), said that when nCoV enters the body, the immune system will fight the virus and manifest itself with symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat. , loss of taste, smell… Many F0 self-treat with unscientific methods, or arbitrarily use drugs without consulting a doctor, this can aggravate problems health issue. Here are 5 mistakes when F0 self-treating at home, to be aware of:

Sauna, blow the wind many times a day

Steaming, blowing the wind does not kill the virus, but only helps the patient feel comfortable. However, if done too many times, it will cause the body to lose water, lose electrolytes and can damage the lining of the respiratory tract. Sauna should only be done if there is no high fever, done in a sheltered place and should not be more than once a day. If you have a lot of stuffy nose, you should drop the nose with physiological saline, use a local vasoconstrictor such as Otrivin or Coldi-B.

Use anti-inflammatory corticosteroids when SpO2 (blood oxygen concentration) is above 95%.

This is a problem many F0 sufferers that Dr. Hoang encounters when participating in online consultations to take care of F0 treatment at home. The main anti-inflammatory corticosteroids are Dexamethasone 0.5 mg; Methylprednisolone 16 mg or 4 mg. This is the group of drugs that are most easily abused and have many dangerous side effects, many of which are used incorrectly. According to doctors, anti-inflammatory corticosteroids are essentially immunosuppressive drugs, when the body is having a high fever, fighting fiercely against the virus, but putting corticosteroids in will suppress the body’s immune system, so the more This creates an opportunity for the virus to attack, which is very dangerous, and can make the disease worse.

“When the SpO2 index is above 95%, not having to breathe oxygen, all the studies to date strongly recommend: corticosteroids are contraindicated,” the doctor said.

Taking too many drugs doesn’t work

Many people, when they know they are F0 or are at high risk, rush to buy drugs that are not clearly tested and are believed to be good at preventing infection, which is completely wrong. Strengthening the immune system can help the body resist the invasion of viruses, but it is a long process and requires a combination of many other factors such as eating well, exercising regularly, and getting proper sleep. . There is no magic potion that can increase resistance in just a few days. All you need to do is follow the safety instructions and gargle solutions that contain 1% povidone iodin or 0.12-0.20% chlorhexidin gluconate. Before and after rinsing these solutions, you should rinse with physiological saline. You can rinse 3-4 times a day.

Taking too many supplements, vitamins, immune boosters

Many mothers, when sending pictures of medicines they are taking for their children who are infected with Covid-19, have 3-4 types of vitamin C, or 3-4 types all have zinc, this is completely unnecessary. Currently, some studies show that using high doses of zinc, vitamin C, and vitamin D can help Covid-19 patients recover faster. However, the scientific evidence is not clear, not highly convincing.

F0 only needs one multivitamin per day. The most important thing is to eat enough nutrients, not lose water, electrolytes and have good sleep. Immune boosters are basically all good, but don’t take too much at once. Strengthening immunity is a long-term story, you can choose the right drug or functional food, use it in moderate doses and use it for a long time to be effective.

Use two antibiotics to prevent infection

Current oral antibiotics are mainly 3 groups, on the blister pack or medicine box, there are small words with the number of mg of strength. The first is the marcolide group: erythromycin, azithromycin, clarithromycin… The second is the beta-lactam group: amoxicillin/clavulanic, amoxicillin/sulbactam, cephalexine, ceforuxime, cefixime, cefpodoxime… The third is the quinolone group: ciprofloxacine, levofloxacine. ..

First of all, Dr. Hoang affirmed that antibiotics have no effect on viruses. In fact, some people need to use antibiotics to prevent bacterial infections because when the body is infected with a virus, the resistance decreases, the risk of bacterial and fungal infections will be higher. For patients with many underlying diseases and inherently poor resistance, the risk of bacterial superinfection is present. People who normally have pharyngitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, sinusitis… should also consider using antibiotics early for prevention.

However, it is not recommended to use two types for prophylaxis, only one antibiotic prophylaxis is enough. Some people, even though they do not have the above risks, still follow the oral prescriptions, take up to two strong antibiotics at the same time, while showing no signs of infection. The overuse of antibiotics is not as deadly as anti-inflammatory corticosteroids, but it will overload the liver and kidneys, while the body is exhausted due to virus attack. In addition, if used incorrectly, the bacteria will become resistant to the drug, and the next time if you have an infection, those antibiotics will no longer work. Doctors recommend F0 not to arbitrarily use antibiotics without consulting a doctor.
