11 people infected with the British nCoV variant

16 samples were taken from patients Hai Duong, Quang Ninh, genetically sequenced by the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, 11 samples infected with nCoV Anh variant, 5 samples had no results.

The results of genetic sequencing were announced by scientists at the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) on the morning of February 2.

Exchange with VnExpress On the afternoon of February 2, Professor, Dr. Dang Duc Anh, Director of NIHE, said that the results of genetic sequencing were dated 1/2. Of 16 virus sequencing samples, 11 samples all with genetic sequences similar to strain B.1.1.7 first appeared in the UK in September 2020. The remaining 5 samples did not meet the standards, so genome sequencing did not show results.

Virus research takes 3-5 days, including virus culture time and several other procedures before sequencing the gene. Gene sequencing takes about 2 days.

On the afternoon of February 1, the Hospital for Tropical Diseases of Ho Chi Minh City informed the results of nCoV gene decoding on patient 1660. This patient has epidemiological factors related to Hai Duong. As a result, the patient carried 17 typical mutations of strain B.1.1.7.

A few days ago, scientists from NIHE and National Hospital for Tropical Diseases also discovered the South African variant of nCoV on two patients imported from South Africa.

B.1.1.7 was first recorded from the southeastern region of England. After tracing genetic evidence, the scientists assumed it was likely that it had circulated in the UK from September at a very low level, then spread more widely in November and December 2020. Some experts believe that the strong diffusion variant is caused by a super infectious epidemic cluster.

Preliminary analysis showed that the UK variant nCoV was 56% to 70% more transmissible than the old strain, spiking the number of positive cases of the virus. Variation has 17 mutations, the rate of change to adapt to the environment is also faster, according to the observations of scientists. In particular, a mutation called N501Y helps the virus to easily attach to human cells. By January 17, the variant appeared in over 60 countries.

From here, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long, Minister of Health, affirmed: “Both outbreaks in Poyun Company, Hai Duong and Van Don airport, Quang Ninh have not known the source of transmission but are due to the nCoV variant from England”.

Minister Long also said the nCoV variant is airborne. Therefore, he recommends people to thoroughly implement measures to wear masks.

Covid-19 in Vietnam rebounded from January 28. In the past 6 days, 276 community infections were recorded in 10 provinces. In which, Hai Duong had the most infected cases (207), Quang Ninh 33 cases. From these two localities, the people who were exposed to F1, F2, spread to the provinces and cities, a few days later were recorded as F0s forming a chain of infection for many others. So far, Hanoi has recorded 20 cases, Gia Lai (6), Bac Ninh (3), Hoa Binh (2), Binh Duong (2), Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Bac Giang with one case each.
